Besides the illiteracy adds insult to injury. Rural life lacks modern facilities. Agriculture and animal husbandry being the main livelihoods. Women have to share with males, the work relating to agriculture and case of domestic animals apart from independently doing the cooking, child care and all other house hold works which makes their life more hard. As the cooking in rural areas is done with traditional fuel, the women have to face smoke and dust regularly, which generally given rise to eye ailments in them. Eye ailments (Generally cataract) are most common in village women. Who generally hesitate to discuss about their aliment.
It is only the second or third stage of eye aliment when it is got noticed in the family. Unfortunately even then the men who control the economy of the family, ignore the situations and do not provide any importance to their ailment. It is also due to the fact that they can not afford absence of women for even a day which may adversely affect the running of family. On the other hand they do not leave any corner for their own treatment by spending freely in private hospitals. There are also single women like divorcees. Widows etc. who do not have any one to help them or accompany them to hospitals for their such treatment.
In these condition the village women are not able to go to hospitals by their own for treatment of their eyes. They are totally dependent on eye camps organised by medical surgical units. From the data available in the M.S.U camps organised are as under :-

The datas clearly shows that the position of female eye patient treated are too much then the male patient.
The mobile surgical & eye unit camps organised in the vicinity of villages have proved very useful for rural areas women patients. They can go to these camps on their own without spending extra money or time and get their eyes treatment.
The MS & EU camps for eye women patients, if organised from time to time in rural areas will prove an important welfare measure for rural women eye patient. Government and NGO's may organise such camps from time to time.

Sub : - Constitution of Mobile Surgical Unit and its utility

Rajasthan is a vast state and is major portion is desert and surrounded by Aravali Range of mountains. Most of population of the state resides in villages and for flung areas. However, a major chunk of its population is infested with poverty, malnutrition, illiteracy and disease. Its main reason is difficult geographical condition and lack of resources. Also, the transport and health services don't conform to the modern technology parameters. The availability of health like fundamental services are negligible in distant areas, which results in poverty and illiteracy of people living in these areas. The health services in health Centres are affected due to lack of modern equipments, technical staff and non-availability of electricity. The pitiable condition of roads and transport also degenerates the health services of towns and cities.
In the light of above condition the state Govt. constituted a Mobile Surgical Unit in 1956 for the welfare of human being its utility is desired as under:-
1. The unit is equipped with modern techniques and equipments. It organises Camps in rural areas so that poor patients could be benefited out of it.
2. Patients are treated here free of cost since they cannot afford costly medicines and lengthy examination process. They even can walks over in Camps and take free treatment without affecting their daily routine.
3. Some of the operations, which could only be operated upon on the Medical Colleges affiliated to the hospitals, can be carried out be these units this results, into relief to the rural areas district headquarters patients.
4. During natural calamities, human accidents, eqidemics etc. these units play an important role as compared to other agencies because these are equipped with modern techniques and experiences staff.
5. Different types of information is made available by these units during natural calamities eradication of disease programmed protection from malnutrition in female and children so that people could become aware of these dogmas and superstition and get rid of them in the Camps organized by these units.
6. With the success of these units the N.G.O's have been able to maintain their existence in the rural areas. Therefore, if the Camps are not there, these N.G.O's can be missing and can affect the health services.
From the data available in the district headquarters in respect of camps organised, it is clear that on account of economic crisis and lengthy process of treatment in the hospitals people do not get them treated there an getting free of cost treatment in the camps.
In the light of necessity of the mobile surgical unit and its utility among rural areas, it further needs expansion in the state. Also, in view of geographical condition of our country, these mobile units can also be formed in other parts of states so that globally, every needy person could be provided treatment.
